The skin tissue has the largest area in the human body and functions as both a barrier and a defender. As such, it tends to be the first tissue to be damaged. Advances in medical technology provide prospects as well as side effects, for example, radiation therapy for cancer. With increasing cancer morbidity and radiation widely applied for cancer therapy, radiation-induced skin injury (RSI) has become a serious concern. In recent decades, research efforts have focused on the mechanisms underlying RSI. This review summarizes the mainstream opinions on these mechanisms, including the pathological, molecular biological, and cytobiological alterations. Radiation-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS), cytokines and involved signaling pathways are evaluated. Other relevant aspects include radiation-induced skin fibrosis (RSF) and radiation-related skin cell senescence. Moreover, we review strategies for the prevention and treatment in clinical and pre-clinical studies to support the treatment of RSI during radiotherapy. The prevention strategies include dose control, pre-irradiation instructions, and RSI assessments, while the main treatments include physical therapy, external-use dressings or creams, biological therapy and surgical reconstruction.

摘要:Moist exposed burn ointment (MEBO) is becoming increasingly popular in China as it shortens wound?healing time and reduces scar formation. However, its exact mechanism in mediating the wound?healing process is not yet clear. In the present study a total of 90?healthy adult male Wistar rats of specific-pathogen-free grade were divided equally into a control group, wound group, MEBO group, recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor (rb?bFGF) group and sham operation group. Wound healing was observed from the extracted granulation tissues and recorded at three time points on 3, 7 and 14?days. Different levels of tumor necrosis factor?α (TNF?α) and interleukin?6 (IL?6) in tissue homogenate were detected using ELISA. Western blot analysis and quantitative PCR were used to detect the expression of nerve growth factor (NGF), substance P (SP) as?well?as tyrosine kinase?A (TrkA) receptor protein and the corresponding mRNA levels in granulation tissue. It was observed that the wound healing progressed faster in the MEBO and rb?bFGF groups compared with the wound group (P<0.01). TNF?α and IL?6 had an upward?downward trend at three time points, with the wound group demonstrating the most obvious increase (P<0.01). NGF and SP mRNA and protein levels in granulation tissue in MEBO, rb?bFGF and sham operation groups reached their highest levels on day?7 and then decreased on day?14. The expression level of TrkA was also measured simultaneously and its expression pattern was similar to that of NGF and SP. These results suggested that MEBO may promote nerve repair and accelerate wound healing through mediating the expression levels of NGF and SP, as?well?as TrkA.

摘要:Background: Burns are considered a serious health affection that leads to several consequences affecting a person both physically and emotionally. Herbal and traditional medicine have become popular remedies among patients worldwide. Aim: This study explores common practices followed in burns as first aid management. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia using a designed questionnaire distributed electronically through different social media. The questionnaire consisted of socio-demographic details, history of burns, causative material, and practices followed in response to burns. Results: 461 individuals have participated in this study. The commonest reason for burns was hot water or steam. The majority of the respondents (63%) had a satisfactory response to self-aid alone at home. The most common first aid options for managing burns at home were cold water alone 195 (42%), any sort of cream alone 177 (38%), or both 317 (69%). Overall, the result shows no statistically significant difference between the outcome of burn injury and the most commonly used burn aids. Conclusions: Most people use creams and water as the first-aid management of burns, while a good number of people use traditional medicine. Overall, people who receive hospital treatment after getting first aid at home give a better outcome.
